I believe… the religion is extinct. Possibly. But Prophet David had a book, and they followed that book. Supposedly it might have been Psalms. I've also heard that some of them were monotheist and some of them were polytheist, so it might have been a racial identifier as well as a religious one, though the Qur'an is referring to religion.

I read in a footnote somewhere that Sabians were an offshoot Christian group who followed John the Baptist.

I think Sabian could be used for anyone else with a religion. Perhaps another word for pagan or heathen? At the time I suppose everyone else was one according to all of the 3 bibles. So today, Hindus and other religions could be included. Buddhists also I suppose even though technically Buddhism doesn't have a G-d. I think the point is, to believe in G-d basically. And according to this, it doesn't matter which one :D

To be perfectly honest, I don’t know whether anyone is going to Heaven or Hell, and I think it’s a little preposterous to even consider and judge, and really really immodest.

And they claim, “None shall ever enter paradise unless he be a Jew” – or, “a Christian”. Such are their wishful beliefs! Say: “Produce an evidence for what you are claiming, if what you say is true!” (Qur’an 2:111)
which warns Muslims at the time not to make the same mistake as Christians and Jews and claim that only Muslims will go to paradise.

Thank you, Nahida and Zeina. I am troubled by the beliefs many people hold about hell because the concept seems so uncompassionate. It has been interesting to learn about your perspective on this and on Islam through this blog.

In those parts of India under Islamic rule, the Muslim rulers eventually extended the concept of Ahl al Kitab to include Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs, Zoroastrians and others. Whether this was due to political convenience or mutual religious acceptance (or a combination) is unclear.
Note that it’s difficult to generalise about Hinduism because it’s a highly syncretic religion with many different schools. Although there are strong polytheistic elements in Hinduism, there are also monotheistic themes that date back to its earliest scriptures. There are too many examples to mention. E.g. “He is One, though the wise call Him by various names: Indra, Rudra, Varuna, Agni.” (Rg Veda) I’m not going to list them all, but you can certainly find quotes to support monotheism if you’re so inclined.
Having said that, even if Hindus believe in one God, there is no prohibition against associating our God with qualities: Mother (Devi, Parvati), King (Rama), Beloved (Krishna), or worshipping them in the form of idols. We also believe that humans can be incarnations of God (avatars).This would be considered shirk, an unforgivable sin in Islam.
But then again, Christians also associate qualities with their concept of God (Father, Son, Holy Spirit), and they do make images and statues of Jesus, Mary and the saints. And they believe that Jesus was a manifestation of God, yet the Quran says they have nothing to fear on Judgement Day. So perhaps it’s not as clear cut as it seems.
Anyway, I’m an atheist and I don’t believe in an afterlife, so I suppose this shouldn’t matter to me. But I’ve always been interested in religion from a cultural point of view.
